Other controllers

The following procedure may be used to verify if the EQ5 controller modification is likely to work with other controllers.
  1. You need a multimeter or a similar instrument.
  2. Verify that the power supply delivers a DC voltage of maximum 30 V. Identify the ground terminal.
  3. Disconnect the power cable and open the controller.
  4. Verify that the navigation buttons work as ordinary switches:
  5. Verify that each switches has one of its terminals connected to ground (< 5 ohm).
  6. Connect the power and the motor cables to the controller and turn it on.
  7. For each button, verify that the voltage at the terminal not connected to ground is more than 3.5 V above ground when the button is not pressed. The AC voltage should be low (< 1 V). When the button is pressed down the voltage across the switch should be close to 0 V.
  8. Put the multimeter in current mode and short circuit one switch at the time so that the current runs through the multimeter. Verify that the DC current flowing into the ground terminal is positive and < 150 mA and that the AC current is much lower than the DC current. (I would normally expect the DC current to be < 20 mA.)
  9. Repeat points 7+8 with different motor speed settings, including at least the highest and the lowest speed.
If the verification results are positive there is a good chance that a modification similar to the one shown here will work. If the navigation buttons are switches, but the voltages and currents are not as required above, a possible solution may be to use relays, which can easily be controlled by the LN2003, coupled in parallel with the switches.
